Etsy update: Sonic E-123 Omega

Wow its been a long time since my last post. From October through ’til January my Etsy store kept me very busy. I thought I would get back into the blog again with an update from my Etsy store. I get a lot of custom order requests which is great because I love making new things. The most unusual request I had in the run-up to Christmas was E-123 Omega from Sonic the Hedgehog.

E-123 Omega

Omega Who?

I will be honest, sometimes I am asked to make a character and I have no idea who it is. This was one of those times! Having totally missed the whole Sonic thing myself I had no idea there was a whole set of characters. I had never heard of E-123 Omega. Step one for this make was some research.

2D to 3D for E-123

The next step was to work out how to move from cartoons and drawings I could see on screen to a 3D felt doll. I started by drawing out a copy of Omega at the full finished size and coloured it in so I could use it as a reference as I worked. I made a copy and cut out each individual component.

From there I basically built him up like a jigsaw. I took a shape then made it 3D (either a cube or a cylinder depending on whether it should be a squared or rounded finish). My original drawing became a map to work my way through. As I finished a component I attached it to the previous one, building up as I went.

All in the details

I generally find it easier to add details onto a piece before sewing it up or attaching it to something else. Faces for example are always the first thing I sew, before I attach the two head pieces together or attach the head to the body. It’s just easier that way. However, with this make I was worried it might not all come together and I might have to redo sections. I focused on getting the basic structure together first and then went back and added on the various details afterwards.

And here he is, E-123 Omega:

Five stars

Before I posted him I sent some photos so his new owners could see what he would look like. I am always like a nervous parent when I put one of my dolls in the post. It’s always a relief to hear when it has arrived safely, especially when it is travelling overseas.

He did arrive safely and I got the most amazing review. I’m so glad they were as pleased with him as I was.

Now Christmas has passed I am on to new orders and making some new items I have designed. You can keep up to date with my latest designs by following me @pepperpotcrafts on either Twitter or Instagram.

Although E-123 Omega isn’t for sale as a standard item in my store, you can request a version of him (or any other character) through my custom doll listing.
