A while ago I shared how I decorated my son’s adventure themed bedroom. Using masking tape to create mountain shapes on the wall made it really easy to decorate.
We decided to use this same approach for a really quick and easy art project. Sometimes its great to have art and craft ideas that kids can do with minimal input. They enjoy the independence and freedom and it can give you a chance to do something for yourself.
This masking tape art project can be as simple or as complex as you like. We were just looking for a quick and easy activity to pass an hour. All we needed was some blank A4 paper, a roll of masking tape and some paint. You could make this a group activity by using a large sheet or roll of paper. It would also make a great outdoor art activity in the summer.
Start by cutting out strips of masking tape and sticking them onto the paper. This bit needs 2 pairs of hands. You can go for geometric shapes and patterns. We went with letters and made the shapes onto paper.
Once the tape is applied they can do whatever they like with the paint. Brush it on, use sponges to dab it or go for the full mess like us and try a splatter approach. They loaded the brush with some paint then flicked it onto the paper. Im happy to report that the furniture and the carpet somehow survived unharmed.
The key to this finish is to keep the paint fairly dry, whether brushing or splattering. If you want more coverage then apply more paint, layers of colour would look great. Be careful not to make the paint too wet or it will begin to leak under the tape and ruin the finish. Leave the paint to dry.
Once it is dry you can begin to carefully peel the tape off the paper to reveal the finished art underneath.
That’s all there is to it! Some of our art was just a fun excuse to paint, but my son did end up making a sign for his bedroom door using one of the initials pages.
Meanwhile I got a chance to update some of the details on my new Etsy listings – I’ve added a range of Hogwarts dolls and a one of a kind Frida Kahlo to my range in the last couple of weeks. Go and check them out!
